The state of Illinois has a new screening program for all returning National Guard troops and a 24-hour hot line to help veterans with combat-related stress. Illinois Veterans Affairs Director Tammy Duckworth announced the first-of-its kind program. The eight million dollar program will screen returning Guard troops for traumatic brain injury and post traumatic stress disorder.
Included in the "Illinois Warrior Assistance Program" is a 24 hour hotline to assist veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder or traumatic brain injury.
That phone number is 866-554-IWAP(4927)
The new program will also require returning Illinois National Guard members to undergo screening for Traumatic Brain Injury.

20,000 vets' brain injuries not listed in Pentagon tally
At least 20,000 U.S. troops who were not classified as wounded during combat in Iraq and Afghanistan have been found with signs of brain injuries, according to military and veterans records compiled by USA TODAY.
The data, provided by the Army, Navy and Department of Veterans Affairs, show that about five times as many troops sustained brain trauma as the 4,471 officially listed by the Pentagon through Sept. 30. These cases also are not reflected in the Pentagon's official tally of wounded, which stands at 30,327.
HIDDEN WOUNDS: Marine didn't recognize signs of brain injury
The number of brain-injury cases were tabulated from records kept by the VA and four military bases that house units that have served multiple combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.
One base released its count of brain injuries at a medical conference. The others provided their records at the request of USA TODAY, in some cases only after a Freedom of Information Act filing was submitted

The US Military’s Brain Injury Program
Brain injuries have become a focus of study and controversy received during the current war. This is partly the result of improved detection and understanding of maladies whose symptoms are sometimes subtle, and can be mistaken for purely psychological maladies. It is also partly the result of enemies whose primary tactical approach is land mine warfare. When these go off, they have a tendency to throw vehicles around pretty hard. Being slammed against the top or side of one’s vehicle leads to concussions, and sometimes to brain injuries. US veterans have been pushing for more work and funding in this area in order to help soldiers who have encountered this hazard, and to improve the future design of equipment and vehicles.

Other statistics dramatically tell the story of head injury in the United States. Each year:
- approximately 270,000 people experience a moderate or severe TBI,
- approximately 70,000 people die from head injury,
- approximately 1 million head-injured people are treated in hospital emergency rooms,
- approximately 60,000 new cases of epilepsy occur as a result of head trauma,
- approximately 230,000 people are hospitalized for TBI and survive, and
- approximately 80,000 of these survivors live with significant disabilities as a result of the injury.
