A College Program for Students with Traumatic Brain Injury
In an academic environment, the residual effects of traumatic brain injury (TBI) can manifest themselves in a variety of ways. College students with a TBI face unique challenges and require individualized attention. CLE staff members use a variety of effective interventions, based on each student’s degree of cognitive function, to achieve the best possible results so that students with special needs, such as TBI, receive the support they need to succeed in college.

Strategies That Can Be Used With Students

Who Have Traumatic Brain Injuries

  1.   Demonstrate new tasks, and provide examples, charts, and other graphic cues when possible to illustrate ideas and concepts.
  2.   State instructions clearly and go over each step to make sure the student understands instructions.
  3.   Paraphrase information to help with recall.
  4.   Review and summarize often.
  5.   Repeat all key points.
  6.   Provide ample time for task completion. Students with traumatic brain injuries often need extra time to process information and complete tasks as well as to respond to verbal cues and instructor questions.
  7.   Encourage the use of schedules, checklists, and notebooks to assist in organizing daily information.
  8.   Break assignments into smaller parts. Break complex tasks down into steps.
  9.   Be prepared for reduced stamina and increased fatigue.
  10.       Allow students to tape record lectures.
  11.       Assist student in obtaining a note taker.
  12.       Have the student sit in the front of the class: this helps with attention, concentration, and also minimizes distractions.
